Nottingham Forest Under 23s continued their winning start to the season with an impressive 3-1 victory over Queen’s Park Rangers at The City Ground on Tuesday afternoon.
A brace from Brennan Johnson and a second-half strike from Alex Mighten ensured the win for The Reds who remain in pole position in the league standings.
Forest took the lead in the 26th minute through Johnson. After a darting run down the right-hand side from Will Swan, the QPR goalkeeper, Dillion Barnes, was drawn off his line and a pass was cut back to Johnson who slid the ball into the empty net.
Forest had the chance to double their lead before going in at half-time when Mighten was forced down on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick led to a fantastic save from Barnes who denied Johnson from getting his second of the match.
Forest found themselves with far more space to play into as QPR came out pushing hard for an equaliser in the second half.
The Reds doubled their lead through a fast-paced counter attack forged by Tyrese Fornah in the 69th minute. Fornah picked up the ball on the halfway line and created space to charge towards the QPR box before passing through to Mighten out wide. Mighten then cut back inside, beating the defender, and drilled a powerful effort into the back of the net.
Johnson netted his second of the match four minutes later after individual brilliance by Yassine En-Neyah. The winger beat three players inside the box before finding the feet of Johnson who hit the ball first time and nestled his shot into the bottom left corner.
QPR struck late as they pulled one back through Arimide Oteh but it was a good display and a convincing win for The Reds.
