Under 23s: Forest 2-5 Ipswich

19 September 2017

Nottingham Forest Under 23s suffered their first defeat of the season as Ipswich Town ran out winners in the Professional Development League.

Despite leading twice, two penalties helped the visitors to a 5-2 victory as their strong second-half showing was too much for Jack Lester's side.

Forest had twice gone in front in the first half through Aaron Smith and Lewis Walters, but a Ben Morris brace and goals from Shane McLoughlin, Ben Folami and James Blanchfield sealed the victory for the Tractor Boys.

The opening ten minutes were lively with Ipswich in the ascendency. Defender Pat Webber saw his cross-shot bounce off the post, with Folami's follow-up shot blocked.

But despite their early pressure, the visitors found themselves behind as Smith continued his fine scoring form on the eight-minute mark. A Virgil Gomis ball found the midfielder in space on the right and he fired the ball low and hard to put The Reds in the lead.

Ipswich continued to press forward and won a penalty on 20 minutes after a tussle in the box at a corner. Midfielder McLoughlin stepped up to send Dimitar Evtimov the wrong way and bring the Tractor Boys level.

Forest showed their clinical nature as Walters restored the lead on 25. Smith turned provider as he found space to see his pass loop over the Ipswich defence for Walters to race onto and chip over the onrushing Michael Crowe.

Ipswich found their rhythm again in the second half as pressure inside the Forest box resulted in another penalty. Defender Adam Crookes committed the foul on Chris Smith on 59 minutes following a corner and forward Morris took the responsibility to slot the ball into the back of the net.

Both sides continued to cause problems for the goalkeepers and on 71 minutes it was the visitors' turn to take the lead as first-half substitute Conor McKendry whipped an inviting ball in from the left-hand side to find an unmarked Morris to head in his second goal of the game.

Following their comeback, Ipswich continued to compound the misery for the Forest defence as good build-up play found an in-form McKendry who squared the ball to find Folami to slot into an empty net.

The result was confirmed three minutes from time as midfielder Blanchfield found space outside the area and his curling effort went past the stretching Evtimov.
