Nottingham Forest Under 23s continued their unbeaten start to the season after a thrilling 4-4 draw with Coventry City this afternoon.
Despite trailing three times, goals from Virgil Gomis, Gerry McDonagh, Adam Crookes and a penalty in the dying seconds of the game from Aaron Smith maintained The Reds' unbeaten start to the Professional Development League campaign in an eight-goal thriller.
Controlled in possession in the opening 30 minutes, Forest threatened in front of goal as efforts from forwards Gomis and Smith were stopped by goalkeeper Corey Addai who was in fine form.
Coventry then began to test The Reds' defence and Devon Kelly-Evans gave them the lead on 31 minutes with a powerful low shot into the bottom right-hand corner of Jordan Wright's net.
The Sky Blues scored a second two minutes later as Jordan Ponticelli latched on to a knock-down from Kwame Thomas and fired it into the far corner.
Five minutes before half-time, Gomis was finally rewarded for his efforts as his shot was deflected in by defender Jordan Thompson with Addai left wrong-footed as he moved in the opposite direction.
The early stages of the second half brought Forest level as Irish international McDonagh levelled the score on 57 minutes when he picked up a long ball and outmuscled his defender before striking it low past Addai.
A minute after the equaliser, Smith found space in the middle and struck a 30-yard shot which had Addai at full-stretch to turn it out for a corner as Forest began to turn the screw on their visitors.
There was danger at the other end though as Coventry carried on their clinical finishing to go back in front. A left-wing cross from Bilal Sayoud found Kyle Finn in the box and his crisp half-volley hit the back of the net to restore the visitors' lead.
It was end-to-end stuff at The City Ground as Forest pulled themselves level again on 74 minutes. Defender Adam Crookes rose highest to head home a corner from the left-hand side to restore parity.
On 88 minutes, Sayoud found himself in space outside the box and struck the ball low past Wright to put Coventry back in front in the last few minutes of the match.
With the result seeming to be confirmed, deep in to the last seconds of the game Forest were awarded a penalty. Smith stepped up to convert the spot-kick to maintain The Reds' unbeaten start to the campaign.
