A rampant performance from Nottingham Forest Under 23s saw them run out 5-0 winners against Cardiff City this evening.
A Virgil Gomis hat-trick and goals from Adam Crookes and Brennan Johnson had ensured The Reds kept their side of the bargain in their hunt for the play-offs, but a draw for Sheffield Wednesday against Colchester all-but ended their hopes.
Gareth Holmes's side took the lead on the stroke of half-time as Gomis curled home from 25 yards, and the forward added his second a minute later with a close-range finish.
Crookes added his name to the scoresheet on 67 as he headed home from a set piece and Gomis had the perfect chance to complete his hat-trick on 71 minutes but his spot kick was saved.
The young forward wasn't to be denied though as seven minutes later he poked home to seal his treble.
There was still time to add a fifth as Johnson fired low into the corner of the net on 82 minutes to complete the rout at the Cardiff City Stadium.
