Under 23s: Birmingham 0-2 Forest

13 April 2018

Nottingham Forest Under 23s’ play-off hopes took a huge boost after they beat Birmingham City 2-0 at St Andrew’s this afternoon.

A first-half penalty from Virgil Gomis before a late header by Anel Ahmedhodzic secured the three points for The Reds who edge closer to second place in the league table.

First-team players Jack Hobbs and Andreas Bouchalakis started for The Reds to add some experience and to get some much-needed minutes under their belt as the Under 23s continued their fight for a place in the play-offs.

Forest made the dream start in just under one minute when they were awarded a penalty after Toby Edser was brought down in the area. Gomis stepped up to take the spot kick and coolly converted it into the top corner, giving his side an early 1-0 lead.

Jack Hobbs then came close to doubling the lead for The Reds. The ball fell to him inside the area after Birmingham failed to deal with a corner but he couldn’t direct his volley goalwards as he put the ball wide.

The Reds had Arvin Appiah to thank on the half-hour mark when he made two goalline clearances. First, Appiah cleared Joe Redmond’s header from the corner before the ball fell back to the same man who volleyed an effort goalwards but he was denied again by Appiah off the line, who ensured his side went into the break ahead.

Edser had a glorious chance to make it two early in the second half after he was sent through on goal, but the midfielder could only fire his effort straight towards the Birmingham goalkeeper. Gareth Holmes’ side continued to hold onto their lead well throughout the half as Blues tried to find their way back into the match.

But the win was soon secured thanks to Ahmedhdozic. Substitute Brennan Johnson whipped in a corner which found the head of the young Swede who directed his header into the net to earn his side a huge three points as the game ended 2-0.
