Match Reports

Forest 0-4 Sheffield Wednesday

14 December 2019

Four goals in the first half, including a hat-trick by Jordan Rhodes, capped off a disappointing day as Nottingham Forest were beaten 4-0 by Sheffield Wednesday at The City Ground.

Rhodes hit his treble inside 37 minutes before Steven Fletcher scored the fourth on the stroke of half-time, ensuring a torrid first period came to an end and left Forest with an impossible job in the second half as Wednesday ran out comfortable winners.

Sabri Lamouchi made one change to the side that drew against Middlesbrough in midweek, with Joao Carvalho coming in to the team in place of Joe Lolley.

Wednesday started quickly and made their early pressure count; a route one ball from Cameron Dawson was flicked on by Steven Fletcher, the ball fell at the feet of Rhodes who fired a left-footed shot into bottom corner.

The visitors doubled their advantage just five minutes later when Adam Reach’s in-swinging cross was met by the head of Rhodes to score his and Wednesday’s second of the game.

The second goal seemed to spur on the home team during a 20-minute spell of possession and pressure but they failed to penetrate the Wednesday back-line, which was a common theme throughout the game.

Forest had one clear-cut chance but failed to capitalise on it as Ben Watson found himself in space just seven yards out with a clear shot at goal after a deep free kick, but the 34-year-old showed little composure and blazed it over the bar.

Rhodes completed his treble and ensured there was no way back for Forest with a spectacular overhead kick just after the half-hour and there was enough time in the first half for Wednesday to add a fourth as Fletcher got his name on the scoresheet. The Owls’ top scorer prodded home his 12th goal of the season following a corner.

In the second half, Forest dominated the ball but failed to work Dawson between the Wednesday sticks in a second half lacking in goalmouth action as a disappointing day ended with a resounding defeat on Trentside.
