Scunthorpe 0-1 Forest

25 July 2018

A first-half goal by Ryan Yates was the difference as Nottingham Forest defeated Scunthorpe United 1-0 this evening.

The midfielder struck from close range against the side he played for on loan last season in The Reds' penultimate pre-season friendly at Glanford Park.

Aitor Karanka handed Tobias Figueiredo a start, giving him his first taste of action of pre-season, while latest signing Jack Colback appeared on the bench.

Forest carved out the first opening of the game on four minutes with some neat passing play out of defence. Daryl Murphy's lay-off set João Carvalho away, with the Portuguese teeing up his compatriot Diogo Gonçalves to cross for the arriving Murphy at the back post, but his effort was well cleared off the line by the covering Conor Townsend.

The Reds were dominating possession but without creating any clear-cut openings. They found themselves in good areas but the final ball was lacking.

Then on 21 minutes Gonçalves was played through by Tendayi Darikwa and, after a misjudgement by Iron captain Rory McArdle, the winger tried to lob an effort over keeper Rory Watson but he didn't get enough on his attempt and it was a comfortable save.

Three minutes later and the deadlock was broken from a set piece. Carvalho's delivery was neatly flicked on by Adlene Guedioura, allowing Yates to smash home from six yards against his former loan club.

On 33 some great play by Gil Dias saw him chase down two Scunthorpe defenders and come out with the ball, see his shot blocked before Ben Osborn fired the follow-up effort over the bar and on 37 some more good passing from Forest saw Yates tee up Murphy for a shot from the edge of the box which he dragged wide.

The Reds deservedly led at the break and five minutes into the second half it was nearly two as Guedioura's long-range piledriver grazed the top of the crossbar.

A good run by Gonçalves to the byline almost created a chance but no one could convert on 65 before Murphy met Carvalho's chipped cross a minute after but could only head into the keeper's hands.

Moments later and Scunthorpe almost levelled as good play on the right by Olufela Olomola saw him get down the right and pull it back for substitute Stephen Humphrys who dragged his effort just wide of the near post in the home side's first real opening of the game.

After that, Forest resumed order as they controlled the game, with Osborn's cross being met by Darikwa at the back post on 70 who saw his volley hacked off the line and then Osborn had an effort of his own on 85 but saw it sail into the Forest fans behind the goal.

Substitutions by both sides seemed to take the tempo out of the game but it was a good all-round performance from The Reds and a victory as well ahead of the final friendly against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Forest: Pantilimon (Smith 67'), Darikwa, Figueiredo (Worrall 46'), Fox (c), Osborn, Yates (Colback 46'), Guedioura (Lam 72'), Gonçalves (Robinson 72'), Carvalho (Soudani 72'), Dias (Appiah 72'), Murphy

Unused subs: Dawson, Cash

Goal: Yates 24'
