Match preview: Stoke City vs Nottingham Forest

13 March 2019

Nottingham Forest take a trip across the Midlands on Thursday evening as they match up to Stoke City in the FAWNL North.

The Reds will be looking to etch some points on the league table after the loss to Sunderland last Sunday. It was a spirited performance from the Reds in which the score line did not reflect the match but the Black Cats were worthy winners in the end.

Stoke currently sit in 7th place in the league table, only two places above the Reds, and will be looking to avenge the result from the reverse fixture against Forest. The Reds ran out 3-1 winners last October when they faced the Potters at home. Strikes from Helena Constantinou and Viki Adam put the Reds ahead inside the opening 30 minutes. Emily Owen halved the deficit in the final moments of the first half from a troubling corner kick. But the goal didn’t shake the Reds’ in the second half as Katie Middleton sealed all three points on the 75th minute. Middleton picked up a great through ball from Costantinou and raced from the Stoke defence and knocked a neat shot past Natalie Hall.

The Potters have only managed to pick up one point from their last four league games and have failed to find a win in their last six games across all competitions. Stoke most recently lost 4-2 last Sunday away to Middlesbrough. Boro had wrapped up the win and all three points by the 77th minute as a goal from Tyle Dodds and a hat trick from Eleanor Dale put the North-East side 4-0 up. But the Potters ensure it was a nervy closing 10 minutes for Boro as two goals in two minutes Roisin Kavel halved the goal deficit.

The Reds’ defence will be keeping a close eye on Amy Hughes on Thursday evening after she has fired herself to fine form this season. The forward has successfully found the back of the net 15 times across all competitions this season. Hannah Keryakoplis will also be looking to add to her goal tally on Thursday as she has also not struggled in front of this year as she has 19 goals across all competitions.

The fixture may also see two Forest players hit goal scoring double figures as Ashleigh Edwards currently has nine goals to her name whilst Katie Middleton has eight. Both only aged 17 are playing in their first season for the Forest first team and have both linked up superbly so far, this campaign. Middleton can also hit double figures for her assists as she currently sits with eight.

Looking ahead to the fixture Forest manager, Alena Moulton, said; “Stoke are a good, tall, psychical side and on their day, are one of the best teams in the league. So, we’ll go there with a game plan that we’ll practice in training and we’ll be ready for Thursday.”
