Frankie Wilson was no stranger to the Nottingham Forest side when she joined the club last summer ahead of the current FA WNL North campaign after already donning the Garibaldi Red previously. But the youngster has ensured this spell is her most successful one to date with the club after cementing her starting spot in the side.
Looking back at her previous time with the club, in which Wilson only managed to pick up seven appearances for the Reds back in 2016, she explained: “I first represented the Forest first team back in 2016, making my debut away at Blackburn Rovers.
“During that season, there were many changes in the management, but now things are much more settled and the whole club is better organised and heading for a bright future both on and off the pitch.”
After venturing away from the Forest set up for a couple seasons Wilson made her way back across the East Midlands and back in red and she expressed how she prefers the Forest camp better now than ever before. She said: “In the current team there is a good mix of young and experienced players and a great atmosphere within the group.”
However, Wilson is ending the season in a different position from when she started as she was shifted from the Forest attack to the defence in a move that has paid off. Since being moved to the backline back in November the 18-year-old has racked up an impressive 14 starts in the right back position. But Wilson admitted that this wasn’t where she saw her season panning out: “I never imagined myself playing in defence.
“For 12 years I’ve generally played as a winger or a forward so it was a bit of a shock to me when I was first asked to play right back, which was the game against the Jamaican National team at The City Ground.
“It has taken me some time to adjust but I have enjoyed the challenge.”
Wilson went on further to explain that one teammate in particular has been key in helping her adjust to her new position. She said: “It is a pleasure playing alongside Lyndsey (Harkin), who has helped me grow into the position.”
Away from the field Wilson has also enjoyed the ‘extra benefits’ that her side receive compared to her previous seasons with the club that has made this campaign feel more important than just the game of football every Sunday. She explained: “I’ve enjoyed some of the extra benefits that have come with the improved relationship with Nottingham Forest FC like getting the chance to get tickets to see the men play, meeting up with the squad to eat breakfast at The City Ground before an away fixture.
“I’ve also enjoyed taking part in the ‘Head to Head’ challenge videos for social media and the increased interaction with our supporters and mascots.”
The full back also revealed the key ingredient that makes playing for the team each week so ‘enjoyable’. Wilson shared: “The team is full of character and the banter within the team on and off the pitch makes playing for Forest so enjoyable.
With only three games remaining of the current FA WNL season Wilson looked ahead to the future and shared her goals for next season. She said: “I am looking forward to a few weeks rest and then starting the new season again with Forest.
“My main aims for next season are to work hard, keep improving and to contribute as much as I can to the team to hopefully challenge for the league title.”
