"And now you gonna believe us, the red's are going up"
Yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooou beauty! For 3 season's I've despaired, 3 season's I've seen kick and rush football, 3 season's I've had to ask "who is it were playing today" and for 3 season's I've listened to fellow, so called supporters, boo and moan their way through games! I say "No more". Let's take this team forward on and off the field. The atmosphere shown on Saturday was immense and it's with that, coinciding with good team performance's on a weekly basis that will send this truly great team back where it belongs.
It was refreshing after the game to hear our Chairman speak of "continued progression". Meaning that this wasn't all that the fan's would be able to celebrate for another 4 or 5 season's. He means getting into the Championship, filling the stadium, making good acquisitions for the squad and not settling for mid table survival.
Let's take the current high that has descended on Nottingham and run with it. Let's go to Pride Park, Molinuex, St Andrews(if Brum go down), St Mary's and any other so called big ground and put Forest's name back in light's. Let's remind people that, before this horrific 5 year period we were once on the crest of the Premiership our self's. I agree with the club's visions, I see no reason why those visions of top flight football can't be met and I certainly do see the basis of a squad that can achieve great things in a red shirt. I will however be first to admit that there are a few positions that could do with strengthening and we'll get to that a little later in the article.
As for all those non-believers, especially the one's that were shouting for CC's head just after the turn of the year, hear is my message to you. I never gave up on the Scotsman and I mean NEVER. Some people will say thing's like " yeah, I always liked him" or "I never doubted him for a minute". They are the liars. When CC came out after last years Yeovil debacle, admitted his mistakes and made a whole hearted apology to the fan's, live on TV, my admiration grew for the man. I believed he deserved of another chance and if the club had given up on him in January like it appeared so many fans had then where would we be right now?
Splash the cash is my message to the club's officials. For three season's we have charged the Nottinghamshire locals well above the going League 1 rate, so I'm presuming there are fund's to be played with. Add the £6.50 we'll get for Grant Holt to the budget and we must have between £5-£7 Million at our disposal. Some people will think that's a lot of money but not me. This is just a realist's look on the state of the modern game. A game that could see Lionel Messi join Chelsea in the summer for reported £80 Million! We don't need vast amount's of players but we do need quality in some positions and quality has it's price.
I like Luke Chambers and think he's done an excellent job for us this season but I do see weaknesses in his defensive capability's. If indeed I can see them then any manager in the Championship will spot them like Lisa Riley doing a moony! New right back needed. Paul Smith has kept 25 clean sheet's this term and yet still the Forest faithful moan when he doesn't distribute the ball within a millisecond of grasping it. Our fan's are fickle and Smith will never be truly accepted. New goalie needed.
Forest fans will join with me when I say "New striker please". If we had finished teams off this season as we should of done, I think back to Carlisle, Oldham, Bristol Rovers and Bournemouth, all home draws, then Forest would of challenged Swansea for the title let alone second spot.
Tyson is quick and tricky to play against but remains un-proven any higher than League 1, he also fails to be fit for sustained period's. Junior Agogo has appeared short of anything like the form he went to the African Nation's cup with and with persistent paper talk of his exit maybe now is the time to cash in. Emile Sinclair still has the jury out and Ormerod and Hoskins are not ours to keep, yet! New striker please.
An abundance of talent in the midfield could be the key if CC has to wheel and deal in the summer to raise extra funds. McGugan, Clingan, Perch, Cohen and McCleary will all stay or at least they should, whilst Davies must be wary that his form has been anything but consistent and as for our so called messiah. Common's either wants to play for us or he doesn't. No one in their right mind let's a player of his ability walk away without a fight but don't let him turn this into a summer soap opera. Do a deal early or sell him on.
A good crop of youngsters and reserves evidently surround the first team and with that Forest have the nucleus for a good strong squad in the Championship. My roaming eye like's the look of Freddy Eastwood, and it would appear that Wolves wouldn't put up too much of a fight to keep him. Michael Mifsud surly doesn't want another relegation scrap with Coventry so maybe we could steel him away and I liked the look of Steven Gillespie. The Cheltenham man who scored here at the City Ground and again against Donny has proven with 16 goals in an ailing side he could go on to better things. David Nugent(Pompy), Rob Ernshaw(Sheep), Leroy Lita(Reading), Nicky Maynard(Crewe),Stern John(S'ton), Jermaine Beckford(Leeds), Jason Scotland(Swansea). If we've got the cash we can get the players!
Paul Connolly of Plymouth is my choice for the right back role. The Argyle man is out of contract in the summer if CC looks to strengthen in that position. Kelvin Davies of Southampton is a strong candidate for a goalkeeping target. With only a year left on his deal and being dislodged by Richard Wright, who would need any more excuses to get away from Southampton? There's also a good keeper doing nothing at Sunderland called Marton Fulop. The Hungarian is highly rated but can't get his chance at first team level.
Who ever the club does or doesn't bring in during the summer one thing is for sure. I'll be there next season, providing the specialised commentary for the visually impaired and desperately holding in my screams of delight and pleasure as we knock a third goal pass the Sheep herders! Come on the Reds.
This is the last rant of the season and I'd like to thank any one out there who find's the time to read it. I hope I've entertained you, opened your eyes to thought's and shown you a glimpse inside my head (scary thought I know). Have a great summer and hopefully Championship Forest will allow me to write again next season, hey maybe I'll get a slot in the programme? Who knows. See ya' next season.
