Injury dogged his progress last season but the midfielder still produced performances that confirmed his growing reputation.
A prodigiously talented midfielder, he's widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects outside the Premier League.
Strong and difficult to knock off the ball, he can also be relied upon to contribute vital goals to the Forest cause.
He scored five times last season, including a precious match winner at Reading that kick-started Forest's Championship survival bid.
However, it wasn't all success for McGugan last season. His first taste of a Forest-Derby game ended in disappointment as he was sent off in the league fixture at Pride Park and was forced to serve a subsequent three-match ban.
A local lad who is a product of the Forest Academy system, he made his first team debut in October 2006 and has been a fixture, injuries permitting, on the scene almost ever since.
Manager Billy Davies was quick to highlight his talent following his appointment but also told the youngster he had to lose weight, so expect to see a slimmer-looking McGugan this term.
Forest debut: October 17, 2006 v Gillingham (A), JPT (substitute)
