The Nottingham-born defender had another outstanding season in 2009-10, forming an impressive central defensive partnership with Wes Morgan.
His cool and composed play has won many admirers and he looks set to play a key role as Forest strive to make up for their play-off disappointment.
And the £300,000 that Forest paid Preston for his signature in the summer of 2007 did not take long to take on a 'bargain' identity.
His football career was launched in Nottingham with neighbouring Notts County, with whom he made more than 80 appearances before catching the eye of a number of suitors.
Then Preston boss Billy Davies signed him in March 2006 and although his senior appearances at Deepdale were limited, there were no shortage of willing takers when he became available for transfer.
Leeds and Doncaster both competed with Forest but the lure of joining the club he supported proved irresistible and the Forest fan was delighted to make the move to The City Ground.
It's a move that has worked out well for both parties and Wilson has also had the added bonus of captaining the side on a number of occasions.
