Forest paid Southampton an undisclosed seven-figure sum to make the striker their first signing of the summer of 2009.

In doing so, they completed a home-coming for McGoldrick, who was brought up in the Wollaton area of Nottingham.

A number of clubs had expressed an interest in him following Southampton's relegation to League One but he set his heart on a move to The City Ground.

He started his career with Notts County's youth set-up and made just 10 first team appearances for The Magpies before Southampton spotted his potential.

They snapped him up in the summer of 2004 and, after loan spells with Bournemouth and Port Vale, he established himself in the Saints' first team.

McGoldrick appeared in every one of Southampton's Championship games last season and helped himself to 12 league goals and two Carling Cup strikes to top their scoring charts.
