The imposing central defender was without any doubt Forest's most consistent performer last season.

He missed just four Championship games - a remarkable achievement considering the fact he played for a large proportion of the campaign with a hernia problem - and finished second behind Chris Cohen in the 'Player of the Year poll.

'Big Wes' is Forest's longest serving player and has become something of a cult hero with the fans who delight in singing 'You'll never beat Wes Morgan'.

It's all a far cry from the days when he wondered whether he would ever get the chance to forge a career for himself in football.

He was on Notts County books as a schoolboy but when they failed to offer him an apprenticeship he went back to college and linked-up with Nottinghamshire non-league side Dunkirk.

He was spotted playing for them by a Forest scout and was eventually given the chance to make his mark on the big stage after a spell in the Club's Academy.

Forest debut: - August 12, 2003 v Port Vale (Carling Cup)

My First......

My first team was Meadow Colts Under 11s or 12s. We were awesome and went right through the leagues. Julian Bennett played in the team below and Jermaine Pennant was in the team above.
The first game I went to would have been a Forest game, even though I was a Manchester United fan. I can't remember who Forest were playing but I remember me and a group of mates going along to The City Ground.
My debut was against Scunthorpe in March 2003 when I was on loan with Kidderminster Harriers and we lost 3-1. I remember being in the Study Centre at Forest when someone passed on a message that Paul Hart wanted to see me. Paul told me I was going on loan to Kidderminster and before I knew it I was down there for training and the very next day made my debut. I hardly had time to be nervous.
My first roommate was Phil Haigh when we were both in the Forest Academy. He was great to share with because he was always ordering drinks and ice cream from room service.
My first influence was my cousin's dad, Pedro Richards, who used to play for Notts County but sadly died in 2001. He was what my mates and I all wanted to be - a footballer.
My first position was as a midfielder for Welbeck Primary School's team. I pulled the strings and was second top scorer behind Julian, who played up front in those days and scored a few goals. He claims he scored 100 in one season but that's nonsense.
The first league ground I played on was Meadow Lane. I played for Nottingham City Boys and we used to play there on a pretty regular basis.
My first autograph would have been one of those printed sheets that clubs give out to supporters. I was given a Forest one when I was at primary school.
My first goal was for Kidderminster Harriers against Cambridge. Dave Kitson, who recently joined Stoke from Reading, was marking me at a corner but when the ball came to the far post I got above him and sent a looping header over the 'keeper.
My first pay packet was for a cash-in-hand job I did with a few mates at Newmarket Racecourse.I have to admit I skived off school to work down there for a while, just doing odd jobs. It was a great laugh.
My first disappointment was not being offered a YTS contract with Notts County after I had been on their books as a schoolboy. I felt I should have got one but instead got invited back for a trial. I wasn't interested and went to college instead.
My first car was a silver Ford Focus. I bought it when I was 18 and it for a few years before moving up to an Audi convertable. I now drive a BMW.
My first album was 'Tease Me' by Chaka Demus and Pliers. It was on tape so I could listen to it on my Walkman. I've no idea where it is now.
My first holiday abroad was to Spain with my parents. I can't remember what part of Spain or even how old I was but would imagine I was probably at primary school.
