But although on the fringe of the first team, he remained an integral part of the squad and always made valuable contributions when called into action.
He made only 17 first team starts in league football during the campaign, most of them at the heart of the defence as a replacement for the injured Kelvin Wilson.
That was his favoured position despite the fact that most of his early appearances for Forest, following his arrival from Northampton during the January 2007 transfer window, were at right back.
He was signed by former manager Colin Calderwood who went back to his former club for a player who had made his debut for Northampton as a 17 year old.
So highly was he regarded at Sixfields Stadium that he was handed the captain's armband and went on to make over 120 for the Cobblers and play a big part in their automatic promotion from League Two in 2006.
Since arriving at The City Ground he has also revealed an ability to get his share of goals for a defender and his aerial threat has often proved priceless in the opposition box.
