From The Ken Smales Archive

1947 - John 'Bill' Brindley born on this day Nottingham. Sadly, John is no longer with us.
1963 - Tommy Gaynor born Limerick
1985 - Craig Westcarr born Nottingham

1887 -We had beaten Cambridge University 3-0 at home on 6th November, but we lost the return fixture 2-0 on this day played on the Corpus ground with Teddy Leighton going off with a sprained ankle after just ten minutes.

1898 - This was the date of the F.A. Cup first round tie against Grimsby Town on our old 'Town Ground'. We won 4-0 with goals from Richards 2, Arthur Capes and McInnes. Attendance 8,000 Receipts £210. Our reward was a home draw in the second round against Gainsborough Trinity.

1923 - Charlie Flood was signed from Bolton Wanderers. An inside-forward who went on to make 100 appearances for us, scoring 22 goals before joining York City in June 1926.

1927 - We lost 2-0 at Wolves in the fourth round of the cup with Percy Barratt missing a penalty in the 80th minute. Team:- Langford, Thompson, Barratt, Saxton, Morgan, Wallace, Gibson, Stocks, Burton, Price, Linley. Attendance 41,112

1944 - This war-time match against Notts County at Meadow Lane, which we won 3-0, attracted a crowd of 8,000. Notts County:- Major, Godfrey, Gray, Nicholls, Walters, Musson, Ledger, Edwards, Dimond, Jones, Rothwell. Forest:- Platts, Hutchinson, Crofts, McCall, Blagg, Elliott, Johnston, Wheatley, Hindley (2), Flewitt, Beaumont (1).

1947 - Larry Platts, who was still in the Army and presumably making his own way to the ground, did not turn up for the match at Luton - Tom Johnston, normally the outside-left, went in goal which meant the team looked like this:- Johnston, Brigham, McCall, Pritty, Blagg, Simpson, Scott, Brown, Barks, Edwards, Lyman. We lost 3-2 with 'Sailor' Brown scoring both our goals.

1963 - Full-back Denis Mochan joined us from Raith Rovers and made his debut on this day, after making an earlier appearance in a 'friendly' at Stockport. His official introduction was in the high-scoring Football Association Cup tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the City Ground which we won 4-3 on an icy pitch that was not to the liking of Stan Cullis the Wolves manager. Team:- Grummitt, Baird, Mochan, Palmer, McKinlay, Winfield, Hockey (1), Addison (1), Julians, Quigley (1), Le Flem (1). Attendance 34,976

1969 - Matt Gillies appointed manager in succession to Johnny Carey. 1973 - Our protracted third round cup tie against West Bromwich Albion was eventually resolved at Filbert Street, Leicester where we lost 3-1. The first game at The Hawthornes ended 1-1 and the replay at the City Ground was abandoned in the 81st minute due to fog with the score also 1-1. The replayed replay ended scoreless after extra-time and so on to a neutral ground. The tie attracted attendances of 15,795 : 19,168 : 17,069 : and 13,201 respectively.

1984 - Due to our early ejection from the F.A. Cup at the hands of Southampton, we had a blank week-end and filled it in with a couple of matches in Oman, thankful to leave Nottingham behind under a four-inch carpet of snow. A two-hour wait at the Charles de Gaul Airport in Paris somewhat dampened our spirits, but you've got to take the rough with the smooth, although that wasn't all the rough we encountered - for some of us anyway. Another two hours delay en route and we were on our way to Muscat, but disaster struck when we realised that four items of luggage had gone on to Bombay! (Mumbai) - two of the four skips of kit, along with the suitcases belonging to Bryn Gunn and myself. They were delivered to us within 48 hours. We won the first match on this day in a canter 5-0. Bryn Gunn's goal in this match proved very lucrative for him as room-mate Colin Todd had offered him 20-1 against him scoring. He had backed himself to the tune of £1. Scorers :- Wigley, Walsh (Pen), Hodge, Wallace & Gunn.

1987 - After a lengthy illness former Committee-man, Chairman, and President, Harold (Al to everyone) Alcock died.
