Garry Birtles rise from non-league to the forefront of European football is one of the most romantic of sporting stories.

And the full tale of how he was spotted playing for Long Eaton United and rose to the heights of being a double European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest unfolds in his newly-published autobiography.

In a magnificent 16 year career he found remarkable glory at The City Ground before his £1.25m move to Manchester United.

That was not the happiest time of his footballing life when a goal drought made him the butt of the nation's jokes but he returned to have another enjoyable spell with Forest and could have won more European silverware but for a corrupt Spanish referee.

He went on to play for Notts County and Grimsby Town before ending his career and now has a successful career in the media as a pundit for SKY TV.
