Billy Davies plans to 'blood' several young players in Nottingham Forest's Carling Cup first round clash with Bradford at Valley Parade tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).
The Reds have five players away on international duty, as well as fitness doubts surrounding skipper
Paul McKenna and
Kelvin Wilson.
And manager Davies believes it's an ideal opportunity to take a close look at the likes of Karl Darlow, Robbie Gibbons, Nialle Rodney and Kieron Freeman, as well as a number of fringe players.
The youngsters won't start the game but Davies want to see how they handle being part of the first team set-up.
He said: "We've got 18 players and we'll have four or five young players we plan to bleed and get ready just in case we don't manage to bring anyone in before the transfer window shuts.
"It's time to get them prepared and ready to be thrown in at the deep end.
"They will make up the squad and get them ready for the possibility that they may have to play after the window closes.
"It's not only a great opportunity for the youngsters but, with five players away on international duty and with injuries to
Kelvin Wilson and one or two others, our fringe players have a fantastic opportunity. "
They have a chance to show they are capable of keeping a jersey and should be playing on a consistent basis in the team.
"I'm looking forward to it - I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle it but more importantly I'm looking forward to seeing how the young lads cope with it."
McKenna and Wilson will undergo fitness tests, while
Robert Earnshaw,
Chris Gunter, Brendan Moloney, Ryan Bertrand and Radi Majewski are away on international duty.
