Backing David

Posted on: Thu 15 Jul 2010
Billy Davies has backed David McGoldrick to become a Nottingham Forest success story.

McGoldrick endured a frustrating first season at The City Ground following his move from Southampton, scoring just three goals from 18 Championship starts and 17 appearances as a substitute.

That frustration has intensified with the striker forced to miss this week's training camp in Portugal after suffering a dislocated shoulder in a close season fall.

But boss Davies is convinced McGoldrick has what it take to make the grade at the club and has urged fans to be patient with him.

"Contrary to what people might think, I do believe this football club has an outstanding footballer in David," he said.

"Unfortunately patience is not a virtue in football.

"He is not at this club for a sprint, but a marathon. Along with many other players here, he will eventually be seen as an outstanding player."

McGoldrick is expected to be out for three months after undergoing successful shoulder surgery.

Davies added: "We are disappointed now for the lad and the team, but he will come back stronger and better.

"He will show the football world what he is all about.

"He is a young player that has plenty to learn. But there are many naïve supporters out there who do not realise what he is capable of."
