Focussing On The Future

Posted on: Fri 05 Feb 2010

Billy Davies today insisted that Nottingham Forest's derby day hiccup will not distract them from their long-term ambition.

The Reds will go into tomorrow's home game against Sheffield Wednesday (kick-off 3pm) looking to return to winning ways after last Saturday's defeat at Pride Park.

Derby brought Forest's 19-match unbeaten run to an end but Davies believes his players remain focussed as they enter a busy period of five games in 15 days.

"It's nice to get back down to business again," he says. "We went on a great run, 19 games undefeated is a wonderful achievement.

"We're disappointed because of where the run came to an end.

"But now it's all about the remaining 18 games and picking up a huge amount of points to keep us at the top end of the table.

"We know want we've got to do and we know where we are.

"There are many teams who would love to be sitting in our position, with 52 points by the start of February and without the pressure of possibly being involved in a relegation dogfight.

"We've got to appreciate that and try and win as many of our remaining 18 games as we can."

West Brom's 3-2 win over Blackpool in midweek relegated Forest to third place in the Championship table.

The Reds are are just one point adrift of The Baggies but Davies adds: "I still genuinely feel that we don't want to go up too early and come straight back down.

"We want to get there at the right time and with the right infrastructure in place and then stay there.

"But it's not now about anything else but looking to the next match and planning and preparing again."

Forest will meet a resurgent Wednesday side who have won four of their last five games under new boss Alan Irvine.

"Forget about league positions, we don't expect an easy game," Davies cautions. "We will only pick up points with hard work and determination.

"That will apply against Sheffield Wednesday and in the 17 games that will follow."
