A Quick Healer

Posted on: Tue 28 Oct 2008

It may be less than two weeks since Guy Moussi underwent surgery but the Frenchman is already eyeing-up a return to the first team scene sooner than expected.
Our summer signing had the operation after damaging his left ankle in last month's City Ground defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace.
The surgeon who performed the operation found there to be greater ligament damage than scans initially revealed and although the procedure when to plan, he told Moussi to prepare for three months.
But the 23 year old midfielder hopes to confound medical opinion by resuming his career with us ahead of schedule.
"I know my body and how it heals," he told us this week with his left ankle encased in a cast he must wear for a month while keeping his weight off the joint.
"The ankle already feels better - I'm not in any pain now - and I'm hopeful I will be fit to play again sooner than other people expect.
"I must wait for my ankle to become stable again and then I'll be in a position to start playing.
"At the moment there's very little I can do. I've been told to try and keep my leg elevated for the time being and we'll see how things develop in the next week or so."
He adds: "It was a bad tackle and although I was in a great deal of pain I didn't realise just how serious the problem was. I thought the pain would ease and I would be able to continue.
"I had to come off and although there were fears that I might have broken a bone, it soon became clear that it was more likely to be ligament damage.
"As a footballer I know I run the risk of being injured - it can happen to anyone who plays the game at any time.
"And when injuries come along, you have no alternative but to accept them. I would much rather be fit and playing but there's nothing I can do about my current situation now, apart from ensure I look after myself.
"I've had a worse injury. I damaged knee ligaments during my time at Angers and didn't play for six or seven months, so for me my latest injury is nothing."
Less than 24 hours after his operation, Moussi was in the stands at The City Ground to watch us arrest our run of four successive defeats with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich.
And he admits he found himself casting a critical eye over his team-mates as a second half penalty cancelled out Garath McCleary's opener.
"It was the first game involving Forest I had watched from the stand and I must admit I found myself being quite critical, both in a positive and negative fashion," he says.
"It gave me a totally different perspective on the game and although I would much rather be out there as part of the team, the time I will spend watching them may well help me when I'm fit again."
Even his injury setback has failed to wipe the smile from the face of a man who has wasted little time in settling down to life on this side of the Channel.
Already hugely popular in the dressing room, as well as among supporters, 'The Moose' is revelling in life in the UK.
The presence of fellow countrymen Hamza Bencherif (who is regularly pressed into service as his interpreter for media interviews), Mickael Darnet and Tony Diagne on our books has undoubtedly helped him integrate into Nottinghamshire life.
"Life in Nottingham is good," he states. "The people have been really friendly and have made me feel welcome.
"I'm even getting used to the food. I've been introduced to Sunday lunches and Yorkshire puddings and Hamza wants to take me for fish & chips - although I'll have to watch my weight while I'm injured."

Question Time

Any reasons for your current squad number?
I wanted 29 because that's the number I had at SCO Angers but Julian Bennett already had it, so I went for 19 because it was the only number available with a nine in it.

Who is your roommate? Has he any bad habits?
I room with Garath McCleary and what's annoying about him is the fact that he spends all his time looking in the mirror messing about with his hair.

Who is the most annoying person to sit near on the team coach?
To be honest the lads on the whole aren't too annoying - at least not yet!

What other sports are you good at and terrible at?
I like playing badminton and would regard myself as pretty good but golf does nothing for me. I haven't even tried to play it but know I wouldn't be any good.

Do you download any podcasts?
No I don't.

Who do you listen to on the radio?
I don't really listen to the radio - I doubt I will do so until my English is better - and mainly just listen to CDs or my IPod.

What would be your dream day?
At the moment I'm dreaming about playing again after this injury lay-off.

Favourite TV programme?
'Jamel Comedy Club', which is a really popular show in France featuring stand-up comedians.

Best practical joke witnessed in the dressing room?
Emile Sinclair and Garath McCleary were having a go at each other a few weeks ago and Garath told him he wouldn't give him lifts anywhere again. Garath has got a Mini and Emile responded by telling him that his car cost him £50 in 50 Cent's 'Window Shopper' video. Most people won't understand but it was funny to us.

Nickname at school?
'Le Moose'.

How do you normally spend your days off?
I like to spend time with the other French lads at the club, Hamza Bencherif, Mickael Darnet and Tony Diagne. We just hang out at places like David Lloyd in West Bridgford.

If you weren't a footballer what would you like to be?
I would probably have worked in my parents' shop back home in France. They sell items from Africa but it's also a place where people can use pay phones and the internet.

Would you rather cook or clean?
Cook ... I love cooking meat.

Which four people (living or dead) would you invite to a dinner party?
I would invite Roger Milla, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, because I admire them all greatly for different reasons, and my mother.

Funniest player played with?
Philippe Brunel, who is a big name in France from the time he spent with Lille. When he first joined my previous club SCO Angers myself the other players were a little bit in awe of him - just like the lads at Forest were when Andrew Cole arrived. But he acts like a child all the time and is just a lot of fun to be around.

Toughest player played against?
Edison.

Worst haircut at the club?
Without a doubt Lee Martin but my friend Hamza Bencherif pushes him closes when he has had his highlights done.

If you could have free tickets to any event, what would it be?
I would love to get tickets for the finals of either the Champions League or World Cup.
