Nottingham Forest continue their unbeaten home run after two goals early in the second half gave them all three points, to put them in third place.
Chances were few and far between for both sides in an uninspiring first half, with both keepers having very little to do.
But two goals in quick succession, early in the second half, filled the Forest side with confidence and they continued to put pressure on a poor Millwall side.
Loan signing Will Hoskins came close to scoring on his debut, with the game less than two minutes old, when Lewis McGugan won a good tackle and threaded the ball through to him as he made the run into the box, but the Millwall keeper was able to deflect it wide of the post.
After the initial good start Forest went quiet, allowing Millwall a lot of the possession. But in the 16th minute Nathan Tyson won the ball and made a terrific break, sprinting down the right before poking the ball towards KrisCommons, but it was a poor pass and a Millwall defender was able to intercept.
McGugan came close a minute later when, finding himself on his own, he shot from 25 yards out, forcing Rhys Evans to dive to make the save, fumbling it in the process, but he was able to catch up with it on the second attempt.
Forest made a good break when Wes Morgan kept the ball in on the right and fed it through to McGugan. He spotted Tyson making a run down the left and was able to pick him out but the final shot went out for goal kick.
Forest continued to struggle to find their rhythm and gave the ball away too easily on a number of occasions and sloppy passing gifted Millwall the ball too often.
But, although Millwall kept winning the ball, they were unable to do anything with it and Paul Smith was hardly troubled throughout the first half.
Forest started the second half in the best possible way, with a goal within three minutes. McGugan won them the corner, Commons executed it perfectly and Julian Bennett rose high to head the ball with considerable power into the roof of the net.
And they came close to a second when Tyson chipped the ball in towards Commons who shot from the edge of the box, but Evans got in the way and it went out for another corner.
Forest then converted their second corner in ten minutes. Commons ball found Morgan whose header was blocked. The ball bounced around before it broke free to Luke Chambers who shot from near the penalty spot and smashed it into the back of the net.
As Forest continued to pile on the pressure, Hoskins did brilliantly well to get away from a Millwall player on the by-line. He turned to cross the ball into the box and it looked for a second like the ball came off a Millwall arm, but the referee was close to the action and quickly indicated it was the player's chest.
And the Forest new boy came close with a shot from the right which beat the keeper but the ball went across the face of goal and just wide of the post.
Hoskins went down in the process and although he was able to continue the manager, not wanting to take chances with his new signing, quickly replaced him with Grant Holt.
Julian Bennett picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and will now miss the Swindon game.
Forest had another chance from a free kick wide on the right, 30 yards out. Sammy Clingan delivered the ball well and Holt's header, his first touch of the game was only just wide.
A curling cross, which forced Evans to tip the ball over for a corner, was the last action for Commons, whose place was taken by James Perch, with eight minutes to go.
Forest's final substitution was Arron Davies, with McGugan coming off to loud applause for his performance, having been by far the best player in the first half.
Holt came close to a goal in stoppage time when Davies got away down the right, chipped the ball in, but the Forest striker's effort was just over the bar.
Just before the final whistle Holt picked up his fifth yellow of the season so will join Bennett in missing the Swindon game.
