Nottingham Forest go through to the next round of the FA Cup after a convincing 3-0 win against Manchester City.

Forest looked comfortable in the first half, taking the lead seven minutes before the break and adding to their tally just three minutes later.

The home side had more urgency about them at the start of the second half and put the Forest defence under pressure. But after City gifted Forest a third the home supporters had seen enough and left the ground in their thousands.

Forest had a great chance in the opening minutes when a great cross by Nathan Tyson picked out Lewis McGugan arriving in the penalty area but, in acres of space, he headed just wide.

And when Forest won a corner Chris Cohen's ball came to the far side of the six-yard box, but Matt Thornhill was also wide of the target with his header.

City's first effort was dealt with well by the Forest keeper when Elano's flick at the near post meant Paul Smith had to dive outwards to intercept the ball to prevent Richard Dunne from getting a shot in.

James Perch, who had picked up an injury early in the game following a tackle, tried desperately to carry on for several minutes, but he was limping heavily before finally being substituted, replaced by Kelvin Wilson.

And Sean-Wright-Phillips was also replaced after picking up a hamstring injury with Darius Vassell taking his place after 23 minutes.

Another well-placed Cohen corner gave Forest their third chance of the game. Ian Breckin ran in unmarked to the near post and his header flashed across the face of goal just wide of the far post.

City came close when the ball came into the path of Daniel Sturridge and his powerful shot through a crowded box produced a good reaction save from Smith, diving to his left to parry the ball out for a corner.

Forest took the lead seven minutes from the break when the ball was only half cleared by Micah Richards. It fell for Tyson who took his time and blasted a beautiful strike past Joe Hart.

And Forest were two up just three minutes later when Cohen did superbly to get away from Pablo Zabaleta and square the ball back to Thornhill. He mis-kicked but it fell for Robert Earnshaw who made no mistake, deflecting the ball into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

And they came close to a third in the 45th minute after a sloppy back-header by Elano fell for Earnshaw who tried to catch Hart out and was only just over the bar.

City looked much stronger at the start of the second half and and there was pressure on the Forest goal as the away side struggled to clear the ball, with Smith doing well to deny Felipe Caicedo.

And when Vincent Kompany fed the ball in to Caicedo, Smith made another good save with a dive to his right.

Paul Anderson created a chance for himself when he made a brilliant run and cut inside Richard Dunne, but his final shot was poor and he dragged it wide of the post.

As City kept the pressure on the ball fell to substitute Jo, who had only just come on, but Wes Morgan stretched his leg out to send the ball in the air for Smith to catch.

And they produced good build-up play when Dunne got away from both Anderson and Chambers and passed to Vassell. He crossed to Elano whose effort hit the back post and Smith put it out for a corner.

Forest were gifted their third goal 15 minutes from time when Michael Ball's throw-in from City's own corner flag went straight to Joe Garner, who had only been on the pitch for a minute. He accepted the gift and buried the ball in the bottom of the net from 18 yards out, starting an exodus of City fans from the ground.

Forest were in control of the game by this stage and each touch of the ball was greeted with loud cheers by the Forest supporters whose applause just about rose above the boos of the home crowd on the final whistle.
