Forest got their first League goal and first three points of the season against Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Doncaster started the better side and had several chances early on but Forest took more control as the half progressed and took the lead on the half hour.
The pace of the second half was slow for long periods and Forest did a good job in containing Doncaster, but created few chances going forward. The game was more lively as it drew to a close a both sides endeavoured to get a goal.
A speculative shot from James Coppinger came close to giving Doncaster a goal in the second minute. His shot from 25 yards had Lee Camp flying to his right as the ball soared towards the top corner, but it flew wide of the post.
And they came close when Kyle Bennett shot from inside the D and Camp managed to get a touch to tip the ball over the bar, although the referee did not see the touch, to the dismay of the home supporters who had hoped for a corner.
A good challenge by Radi Majewski gave Forest a break with him feeding the ball up to Matt Derbyshire but his low ball in couldn't reach David McGoldrick and the ball went wide.
Forest threatened again with a cross by Andy Reid to the back post where the ball missed Luke Chambers but found Wes Morgan who got a touch and the ball looped towards goal and only just went wide.
A good run by Bennett gave him a chance when he got away from Chris Cohen but he shot wide and over.
And Camp had to make a save when Giles Barnes provided for Simon Gillett whose effort on goal was easy for the Forest keeper to gather up.
It was a defender who scored Forest's first league goal of the season when Brendan Moloney won the ball in midfield and fired in a good cross from the right towards the far post where the ball found Chris Gunter who headed powerfully down towards the post. Gary Woods was unable to keep hold of the ball and it ran over the line.
A superb save by Camp prevented Doncaster from getting an equalizer nine minutes before half time when Gillett's ball in found Coppinger whose shot went flying in towards the far post, forcing Camp to leap up and tip the ball over the bar with both hands.
Forest looked dangerous again when Cohen knocked the ball forward and it ran through to Gunter and only a good challenge by Mustapha Dumbuya stopped the Forest player in full pace.
And they had a chance from the corner with a good ball driven in by Reid to Majewski who volleyed wide of the right-hand post.
Doncaster missed a chance early in the second half after a good cross by Barnes picked out Gillett, but good play by Gunter put him off and the ball went wide.
And the home side threatened again when Bennett got away from Gunter but Dumbaya's cross wasn't great and Majewski cleared the danger.
Derbyshire was the first Forest player to be substituted, just before the hour mark, replaced by Robbie Findley who took his place up front.
After a quiet period from Forest they won a free kick just outside the corner of the penalty area when Findley got between two players and was brought down by one of them.
Majewski got good pace and curl on the ball, which went over the wall but landed on top of the net.
McGoldrick, who had produced a creditable performance, made way for new signing Ishmael Miller with 15 minutes remaining.
Doncaster came close to a late equalizer when Forest were caught out by a quickly taken corner. As the ball came over Gillett made the run in and thumped the ball towards goal, but it went straight towards Camp who made the save.
After a quick break by Forest, Doncaster were straight back on the attack and Camp was forced to make another save from a good cross in.
A great run by Miller could have produced a chance when he got past George Friend and the Forest player looked like he was held back as he fired over the cross, which was beaten away.
Joel Lynch was brought on in the 90th minute, just before the four minutes stoppage time was announced and Reid was booed by the home crowd as he took his time leaving the pitch.
